Joe Sneed, Jacob Elias and Misha Capecchi, Portland-based artists, have organized a community art project for youth from Da Vinci Middle School and 100th Monkey Studio. The project consists of a series of creative workshops that culminate with the youth group collaborating with residents at Dignity Village (www.dignityvillage.org) on creating a greenhouse out of recycled materials. We will work with the youth group on three initial week long workshops that guide them toward their project at Dignity Village. In the workshops the participants will learn art techniques related to gardening and sustainable design. Local organizations and artists have volunteered to participate in the workshops, including SCRAP, Growing Gardens and Local Victory. They will supplement our teaching by providing the youth group with demonstrations, materials and experience in active community engagement, as well as 4 to 1 ratio for students to artists. To conclude the project, exhibitions documenting the creative process will be held at 100th Monkey gallery and/or Da Vinci Middle School.

Workshop 1, May 3 - 6:
Build miniature greenhouses out of recycled materials. The youth group will tour SCRAP and choose materials for their individual structures. We will help each youth design a structure large enough to accommodate the growth of at least one plant.

Workshop 2, May 10 - 13:
Design pots for plants that will be grown in the miniature greenhouses. Rebecca Shelley, creator of the Local Victory project, will be our guest artist for this workshop. She will provide the youth group with seeds and demonstrate how to plant.

Workshop 3, May 17 - 20:
Work with Growing Gardens on building gardening structures at a local family's home. The group will also collaboratively design an art piece to adorn a structure they have built. The art piece will be based upon their conversation with the host family.

Workshop 4, May 24 - June 20:
Build greenhouse at Dignity Village. The group will take a tour of Dignity Village, led by Joe Palinkas, resident and community outreach organizer. Then the youth will meet with village residents and discuss possibilities for the design of the greenhouse. After deciding upon a design, the youth group and the Dignity Village residents will build the greenhouse out of recycled materials donated by The Rebuilding Center.

Exhibition, Date Yet To Be Determined:
A public exhibition will be held at the 100th Monkey Studio gallery or DaVinci Middle School displaying the youths' art from the workshops and photos documenting the project's process.
